Sacramento defeats Tucson 5-2 in first game of series
Grant Green’s two-out RBI double in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Sacramento River Cats went on to defeat the Tucson Padres 5-2 Friday at Kino Stadium. The River Cats took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off Shane Peterson’s two-run blast into the right field bullpen. Travis Buck responded with a two-run home run of his own in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2. The home run was the fourth of the season for Buck. After Green’s go-ahead double in the seventh, the River Cats tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth off RBI hits from Jemile Weeks and Michael Choice. Pedro Figueroa closed out the final two innings for Sacramento to earn his first save of the season. Mike Ekstrom won his first for the River Cats after tossing two innings of scoreless relief. Padres’ reliever Brad Boxberger was charged with his third loss surrendering three hits and one run in two innings. Starting pitcher Wilfredo Boscan went six innings allowing five hits, two runs, and had three strikeouts. Emilio Melendez and Ryan Bronson to play in Coca Cola Academic All-Star Game
Emilio Melendez of Tucson High and Ryan Bronson of Canyon del Oro were chosen to play in the 2013 Coca Cola Classic Academic All-Star Game. The game honors high school seniors who have preformed well both on the field and in the classroom. Melendez finished the season with a .431 batting average, the second highest for the Badgers. The second baseman also compiled 21 runs, six doubles, and one triple. On the base paths, Melendez stole a team-high 14 bags and helped Tucson to the D-I State semifinals. Bronson batted .407 for the Dorados and hit a team-high ten doubles. The catcher also scored 31 runs and drove in 25 RBIs and led CDO to their tenth straight state playoff appearance. Cienega’s Tony Gabusi will also be at the game as a coach for the West Team. The All-Star Game will be held on Saturday, June 8, at Surprise Stadium, the spring training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. that day. Omaha defeats Padres in series finale behind Colon’s three RBIs
Christian Colon’s three RBIs helped the Omaha Storm Chasers to a 5-1 win over the Tucson Padres Thursday at Werner Park. The Padres ended their road trip with a 4-4 record and split their series in Omaha 2-2. The Storm Chasers scored three runs in the bottom of the third off Colon’s two-run single and Xavier Nady’s RBI single to take a 3-0 lead. Jonathan Galvez brought around the first run of the game for the Padres in the fourth with an RBI single to center. Anthony Seratelli came home on a wild pitch in the sixth to extend Omaha’s lead to 4-1. Colon picked up his third RBI of the game in the seventh bringing home Paulo Orlando on a ground-rule double to right. Chris Dwyer earned his fourth win for Omaha going six innings scattering six this, three walks and one run. Sean O’Sullivan lost his third game for Tucson allowing eight hits, four runs, and two walks in six innings. Padres rally for 7-5 win in Omaha behind eight extra-base hits
The Tucson Padres pounded out 14 hits Wednesday highlighted by Rene Rivera’s two-run go-ahead single in the seventh to defeat the Omaha Storm Chasers 7-5 at Werner Park. The Storm Chasers jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning off consecutive sacrifice flies from Max Ramirez and Xavier Nady. Jesus Merchan got one run back in the top of the second with a two-out RBI single. Omaha responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Brett Hayes. Cody Decker blasted a two-run double off the left field wall to tie the score at 3-3 in the third inning. Nady lead off the bottom of the fourth with his seventh home run of the year to put the Storm Chasers in front 4-3. After Omaha added a run in the fifth, the Padres scored one in the sixth off Justin Miller’s RBI groundout. The Padres took the lead in the seventh and scored another run in the eighth off Gregorio Petit’s RBI double, the team’s eighth extra-base hit of the game. Wild tenth inning leads to 5-2 win for Padres in Omaha
The Tucson Padres scored three runs without a hit or error in the tenth inning to defeat the Omaha Storm Chasers 5-2 Tuesday at Werner Park. The Padres went ahead 2-0 in the first inning off Yasmani Grandal’s RBI single and Brandon Allen’s sacrifice fly. The two runs marked the fifth consecutive game that Tucson has scored in the opening inning. Clayton Richard, who was making his second rehab start for Tucson, went six innings allowing five hits and no walks. The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when the Storm Chasers got on the board off Christian Colon’s RBI single. Chad Tracy tied the game in the seventh inning with an RBI single. Omaha had an opportunity to take the lead in the eighth with a runner on third and two outs, but Padres’ reliever Brad Brach got Johnny Giavotella to fly out to left to end the threat. After the Padres rallied for three runs in the top of the tenth, Miles Mikolas closed out the bottom half of the inning for his seventh save of the year.
