Zuniga’s shutout and Arvizu’s RBI single help Pima Aztecs sweep Eastern Arizona

Keith Zuniga’s complete-game shutout and Jesus Arvizu’s go-ahead RBI single in the second game helped Pima Community College sweep Saturday’s doubleheader against Eastern Arizona in Tucson.

In Game 1, Zuniga earned his fourth win of the season putting him in a tie for the conference lead. The Nogales High School grad received early run support with a three-run first inning by the Aztecs.

In the second game, there were four lead changes with the last coming in the bottom of the eighth when Arvizu drove in Luis Robles for the go-ahead run. Jake Cole came in to pitch the top of the ninth and sealed the victory for the Aztecs with his first save of the year. Cole Plouck earned the first win of his collegiate career in relief of starter Hyrum Formo who struck out five batters in 6.2 innings pitched.

Here is a look at the two games:

GAME 1 –Pima 5, Eastern Arizona 0

Big Moment: Pima opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first off RBI singles from Alec Beyersdorf and Juan Gamez. Dylan Dyson also brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.

Key Player: Zuniga surrendered only four hits and two walks in his outing, while also punching out five batters. The complete game was his second of the season.

By the Numbers: 3. Players with multi-hit performances for the Aztecs: Gamez, Arvizu, and Kyle Becerra.

GAME 2 –Pima 6, Eastern Arizona 5

Big Moment: Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the eight Robles and Beyersdorf began the inning with two singles. Dyson then sacrificed Robles over to third base with a fly out. Arvizu followed with an infield single allowing Robles to score from third base for the go-ahead run.

Key Player: Aside from scoring the in the eighth, Robles also scored in the fifth off a single by Dyson.

By the Numbers: 7. Strikeouts for Flowing Wells grad Xavier Zavala, who was the starting pitcher for Eastern Arizona.

Up Next: The Aztecs (9-10-1) travel to Coolidge, Ariz., for a doubleheader against Central Arizona College on Tuesday, March 5. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
