Ian Kinsler (Canyon del Oro High School) started at second base for the Texas Rangers in their season opener at Houston. The opening day start was the seventh time in Kinsler's eight-year major league career that he has started on opening day. Kinsler was also named on Sunday the top second baseman in Rangers' history by MLB Network in their Franchise Finest Series. MLB Network also recognized Trevor Hoffman (Arizona Wildcat) as the top closer in San Diego Padres and the National League West history. Shelley Duncan (Arizona Wildcat/Canyon del Oro High School) was added to the Tampa Bay Rays opening day roster on Sunday, while Jason Donald (Arizona Wildcat) was sent down to Triple-A by the Cincinnati Reds to start the season. Pima falls in both games of doubleheader to Scottsdale
The Pima Aztecs fell in both games of their doubleheader to Scottsdale Community College on Saturday in Tucson. The Aztecs held a 1-0 lead in the first game after an RBI ground out by Alvaro Flores in the bottom of the second, but the Artichokes’ four-run sixth inning helped Scottsdale to the win. Jake Cole to the loss on the mound dropping his record to 3-4 on the year. The right-hander yielded five hits, one walk, but no earned runs. In the second game, Scottsdale scored six runs off nine hits to defeat Pima 6-1. The Aztecs one run came in the fourth inning off an RBI single to left field by Luis Robles. Will Holbrook took the loss going 3.2 innings allowing five hits, two walks, and two earned runs. Wildcats sweep Utah with 2-1 victory on Saturday
Two runs in the last three innings of the game helped Arizona complete a three-game sweep of Utah with a 2-1 win on Saturday at Hi Corbett Field. Johnny Field broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to right-center field to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0. Arizona added to their lead in the following inning with a single from Trent Gilbert to bring home Brandon Dixon. Utah scored one run in the ninth, but Mathew Troupe was able close out the win for his sixth save of the year. Augey Bill earned his third win of the season in a relief appearance for Tyler Craword, who allowed no runs and struck out five in 6.1 innings of work. Seven-run fifth inning aids Arizona to 15-4 win over Utah
A seven-run fifth inning put the game out of reach for Utah and helped Arizona to a 15-4 win on Friday at Hi Corbett Field. The Wildcats picked up ten hits in the contest lead by Trent Gilbert and Joseph Maggi who both had two. Five players for Arizona also had multiple RBIs in the game contributing to the second-highest scoring output this season. Relief pitcher Tyger Talley earned his second consecutive win and Nick Cunningham who pitched the final three innings of the game earned his second save of the year. Starter James Farris went four innings allowing five hits and three earned runs. Here is a deeper look at the game: Arizona 15, Utah 4 Big Moment: After the Utes scored three runs in the fourth and fifth, the Wildcats responded with a big inning in the bottom of the fifth. Arizona scored seven runs off three hits, three walks, and two wild pitches. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning Gilbert sent a double down the left field line to bring in three runs for the big hit of the inning. Key Player: Gilbert finished the day with five RBIs off two hits and also scored three times. The second baseman now has 34 RBIs on the season. By the Numbers: 2. Arizona earns first conference win with 4-3 victory over Utah
Arizona earned their first conference win of the season on Thursday defeating Utah 4-3 at Hi Corbett Field. The Utes held a 2-0 lead to start the game, but the Wildcats evened the score in the fourth with RBI hits from Ryan Koziol and Johnny Field. Utah reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth off a RBI single by Tyler Relf. Arizona rallied once again in the bottom half of the inning with a triple by Field, who would later cross the plate on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Willeford. Zach Gibbons’ RBI single in the seventh brought home Kevin Newman for the go-ahead run to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead. Relief pitcher Tyger Talley earned his first win of the season and Mathew Troupe recorded his fifth save. Konner Wade started on the mound and went six innings yielding six hits, two earned runs, and eight strikeouts. Here is a deeper look at the game: Arizona 4, Utah 3 Big Moment: With the scores tied 3-3, Trent Gilbert lead off the bottom of the seven with a single to right field. Newman followed with a sacrifice bunt that he was able to reach base on because of an error by Utah pitcher Luke West.
