After a successful first season in the minors, former Arizona Wildcat center fielder Joey Rickard is now preparing for his first spring training with the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization.

The ninth round pick of the Rays will report to Port Charlotte, Fla., on March 6, for the start of minor league camp.

“I’m continuing to workout and get in baseball shape,” Rickard said in preparation of his first spring training and the 2013 season.

The outfielder is coming off a year where he batted .279 with 35 runs and 11 stolen bases in 47 games for the Class-A Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades. He also had an on-base percentage of .371 and had an eleven-game hit streak from July 25 to Aug. 6.

Rickard performed so well in his first season of professional baseball that he was invited to play in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

“It was a great experience,” said Rickard, who started in right field for the American League team at the All-Star Game. “It was definitely an honor to go there and play. There was a lot of talent in the New York-Penn League.”

Rickard, who had six hits during the Wildcat’s College World Series run, ended the year with his second championship ring helping the Renegades to the New York-Penn League title in September.

Before heading off to Florida to begin his second professional season, Rickard stopped by his old stomping grounds at Hi Corbett Field on Friday, Feb. 15, to see his former team play their season opener. Rickard along with former Wildcat teammate Kurt Heyer threw out the first pitch during the opening day ceremonies honoring the 2012 National Championship.

“It definitely brought back some memories and I enjoyed it,” Rickard said.

Message We are Joey Rickard’s grandparents and came to Tucson last season to watch the baseball team for 3 months. We loved the team and are still following it. Hope they win it all again! It was very good to see Joey’s name and news in your article. We also like to follow the other Jr. members who were drafted. Thanks!
