Seth Mejias-Brean (Arizona Wildcat/Cienega High School) joined the Cincinnati Reds' big league camp on Thursday for a split-squad game in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mejias-Brean doubled, score one run, and played shortstop in his spring training debut against the Colorado Rockies. In the Reds' other spring training on Thursday, Jason Donald (Arizona Wildcat) compiled three hits including two doubles and drove in two runs against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Goodyear, Ariz. Arizona splits mid-week series with Utah Valley after 14-5 win
Utah Valley had a chance for a two-run inning in the second, but a diving catch in center field by Johnny Field limited the Wolverines to a one run advantage. That lead was short lived as Field took the momentum into the bottom of the third with a RBI single to tie the score at 1-1. Brandon Dixon followed Field with a two-run home run to take the lead and ignite the Wildcat’s offense for 14 runs on Wednesday to defeat Utah Valley 14-5. Five of Arizona’s starters had multi-hit games including Field and Dixon who both had three hits. Freshman left-handed pitcher Cody Moffett earned the win in his first career start for the Wildcats allowing only two earned run sin 5.1 innings. Here is a deeper look at the game: Arizona 14, Utah Valley 5 Big Moment: The Wildcat’s offense ignited for six runs in the bottom of the fifth off of four hits and two throwing errors by Utah Valley catcher Court Zollinger. Sam Parris had one of the two extra-base hits with a two-run double to left field. Key Player: Dixon had three hits and three RBIs in the game. His home run was the second of his collegiate career. Cole pitches Pima Aztecs to complete-game victory over Phoenix College
After extending their win streak to three in their first game on Tuesday, Pima Community College dropped a one-run contest to spit their doubleheader at Phoenix College. In Game 1, Jake Cole earned his first win of the season pitching a complete game against the Bears for a 5-1 victory. The lone run for Phoenix came in the fourth inning when Canyon del Oro graduate Tanner Sinclair scored on a single. Sergio Ortiz and Jesus Arvizu both contributed with two RBIs for the Aztecs. Pima started off the second game with a 2-0 lead over the Bears, but a three-run sixth for Phoenix aided them to a 3-2 win. Aztecs’ starter Scotty Watson was charged with his third loss of the season. Alec Beyersdorf led Pima with two hits against the Bears. Here is a look at the two games: GAME 1 –Pima 5, Phoenix College 1 Big Moment: Ortiz’s two-run single to right field put Pima ahead 2-0 in the top of the second. Utah Valley defeats Arizona 3-1 behind pitching of Andrew Freter
Three runs in the first three innings for Utah Valley was enough for starting pitcher Andrew Freter to hold off the Arizona Wildcats for a 3-1 victory on Tuesday. The loss at Hi Corbett Field was the first for Arizona since May 26, 2012 when they fell to Arizona State in the second to last game of the regular season. The Wolverines jumped ahead in the top of the second scoring two runs off a double play and a triple by Beau Kallas that Wildcats’ left fielder Joseph Maggi lost in the lights. Utah Valley added another run in the third off a sacrifice fly from Kai Hatch. Trent Gilbert drove in the lone run for the Wildcats with a RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Cunningham pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Tyler Crawford, who only lasted 2.1 innings. Crawford suffered his first loss of the season allowing four hits and three runs.
