Sahuaro High School grad, Josh Weyker continues college career at West Texas A&M
After helping Eastern Arizona College to their first winning record in ten years, Sahuaro High School graduate Josh Weyker joins a baseball program at West Texas A&M University that reached the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The NCAA Division-II school located in Canyon, Texas, a community just outside of Amarillo, spent part of 2012 ranked in the Top-25 nationally and played in the Lone Star Conference playoffs. WTAMU contacted Weyker in April about continuing his college career with the Buffalos and had him come to their campus for a visit. “I decided to go to WTAMU because I loved the campus and the facilities are top of the line,” said Weyker. “The all turf field with a clay mound, a clubhouse with their own lockers, and a brand new weight lifting facility, there was definitely a D-1 level feel to it.” The Buffalos plan to be use Weyker as a two-way player and he should have an immediate impact on the team’s pitching staff in 2013. “I believe I can contribute most on the mound for WTAMU,” said Weyker. “I believe that I have very good control of both sides of the plate and also have a power type of arm that can blow people away. I also believe that I am a smart pitcher and can keep the hitters off balance.” In his two junior college seasons at EAC he appeared in 52 games earning eight wins and 86 strikeouts. His sophomore year he recorded an ERA of 2.17 and had a .302 batting average. That same season, Weyker was part of a...

Minor league managers to share experience with Tucson youth at New Year’s Day Clinic
Charlie Montoyo’s and Tom Spencer’s baseball careers have never crossed paths in their combined 60 plus years of professional baseball. On Tuesday, Jan. 1, that will change as the two minor league managers will share their experience and insight with players 12 and older at the “Professional Baseball Clinic” at Pima Community College. The clinic setup by Centerfield Baseball Academy was originated by CBA’s Vice President and Director of Operations & Marketing, Ryan Lineberger. Lineberger, who has gotten to know both coaches through the academy, wanted to setup a clinic for Montoyo and Spencer to provide advanced professional instruction on all aspects of the game. “We wanted to make this really special. Its something you don’t get everyday here in Tucson,” Lineberger said. “With their expertise of the infield, outfield, and hitting we really wanted to target on that and give players the opportunity to get professional experience from two coaches with 60 plus years of professional playing and coaching experience.” The clinic on New Year’s Day will last for two hours with Montoyo working with the infielders and Spencer helping the outfielders. Both coaches, who have won Triple-A International League championships, will provide hitting and base running instruction as well. “I really thought it was a great idea when (Lineberger) called and told me about it,” said Montoyo, a former major league player with the Montreal Expos. “If these...

Kyle Kilgore joins Aggies after watching New Mexico State play in Tucson Regional
New Mexico State University reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine years in 2012 playing in the Tucson Regional at Hi Corbett Field this past June. For Ironwood Ridge High School and Pima Community College graduate Kyle Kilgore it was the second time he was able to see his future school play in Tucson. Kilgore was also in attendance at Hi Corbett Field when the Aggies swept a mid-week series against the Arizona Wildcats in March. Both times he saw them play he was impressed with their style of baseball. “I decided to attend New Mexico State because I liked the success they had last year and when you have the best hitting coach (Rocky Ward) in the nation in your own dugout, who wouldn't choose that school,” said Kilgore. The Tucson native will have the opportunity in 2013 to help the Aggies reach the NCAA tournament for the second straight season and the fourth time in the program’s history. “I believe I can contribute a little bit of everything to New Mexico State. We have a great team this year and everyone will contribute something beneficial to the teams success.” NMSU first contacted Kilgore last fall, while he was representing Pima at the ACCAC Division I Sophomore All-Star Game in Phoenix. Kilgore played two years at Pima where he batted .281 and accumulated 35 RBIs and 47 runs. The outfielder also appeared in two games on the mound for the Aztecs his sophomore season. In one of those relief appearances he earned a win in...
