San Diego renews player development contract with Tucson Padres through 2014
The San Diego Padres renewed their player development contract with their Triple-A affiliate the Tucson Padres through the 2014 season on Friday, Sept. 28. The extension does not mean the team will stay in Tucson, Ariz, but that the club will remain a member of the San Diego organization no matter where the team is located. The two-year renewal with minor league affiliates is a common practice among major league organizations. San Diego had already extended the contracts of their other minor league teams earlier this year. The Tucson Padres are expected to move to El Paso in 2014, when a new ballpark is expected to be finished. The Pacific Coast League granted the sale of the Padres to the MountainStar Sports Group on Tuesday, Sept. 18, who plan to bring the Triple-A team to El Paso by 2014. The El Paso City Council approved a contract for a lease and construction of the new downtown ballpark on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Padres will begin what is likely their final season in Tucson on Thursday April, 4, 2013 in Salt Lake. The first home game at Kino Stadium will be on Friday, April 12, against the Fresno Grizzlies.

Indians confirm former Wildcat, Terry Francona, as candidate for manager
Cleveland Indians’ General Manager Chris Antonetti confirmed on Friday, Sept. 28, that former Arizona Wildcat, Terry Francona, is a candidate for the team’s managerial position for 2013. The Indians have named one other candidate for the manger spot, Sandy Alomar Jr., who is currently serving as the team’s interim manager. Pima Aztecs’ devotion drives team through early morning workouts
As 6 a.m. approaches on Friday, the Pima Community College West Campus sits deadly quiet at the foot of the Tucson Mountains. While most students are still asleep in their beds, a line of headlights creeps down Greasewood Road about 15 minutes before the top of the hour. This is when the Aztec baseball team arrives on campus with dreary eyes and motivated hearts, ready for an early morning fall workout. Fall baseball is an essential part of every collegiate teams’ progression toward the regular season. At Pima, it is a time for new players to solidify a spot on the roster and for veterans to improve their skills and increase their chances of being noticed by a NCAA Division-1 school or Major League Baseball. “The fall workouts give the coaches an opportunity to see who is sold on the program and who will be the players that will lead the team once the season starts,” said Andre Porterfield, a sophomore outfielder and graduate of Sahuarita High School. The team holds regular practices on the field in the afternoons and plays games against other junior colleges and club teams on the weekends to develop their on-field skills, but the morning workouts are where the players strengthen their bodies and minds. The Aztecs are in the weight room by 7 a.m., on Tuesdays and Thursday lifting weights for an hour. On Wednesdays and Fridays the team uses the track at 6 a.m., for an hour and a half of running and agility drills. The players wakeup more than an hour before practice...
