Padres fall to Rainiers despite two home runs from Clark
The Tucson Padres held a comfortable eight run lead heading into the sixth inning on Monday, July 30, but a nine spot from the Tacoma Rainiers put them ahead for the rest of the game winning by score of 11-8. The Rainiers offense broke out with seven hits and took advantage of two Padres’ fielding errors during their sixth inning scoring outburst. Luis Jimenez put Tacoma ahead when he lined a single to right field that Jeremy Hermida had trouble fielding allowing two runs to score. Jimenez was thrown out advancing to third base on the play to end the sixth. Matt Palmer, Jason Ray, and Miles Mikolas all pitched in the inning with Ray officially picking up the loss. Tucson came out scoring early in the game with all eight of their runs coming in the first four innings. Tacoma starter Erasmo Ramirez, who the Padres struggled hitting off of last week, surrendered nine hits including two home runs to Matt Clark. The two blasts gave him 100 for his minor league career. The home stand with Tacoma will come to a close on Tuesday, July 31. First pitch from Kino Stadium will be at 7:05 p.m. Box Score

Padres sweep doubleheader to secure first winning month
For the first time since June of 2011, the Tucson Padres secured a winning record for the month of July by sweeping a doubleheader against the Tacoma Rainiers on Sunday, July 29, by the scores of 5-3 and 2-0. The two wins boosted the Padres’ record in July to 14-12 with two games remaining in the month. In game one, Tucson would open the scoring in the first inning with a RBI single by Jedd Gyorko. Both teams would score in the second inning and Jeremy Hermida got Gyorko home on a sacrifice fly in the third to give the Padres a 3-1 lead. Blake Tekotte increased the score in the fifth with a two-run single into right field. The seventh and final inning saw a rematch of last Friday’s game in Tacoma with Padres’ closer Erik Hamren facing the Rainiers’ Luis Rodriguez, pinching hitting with one out and runners on the corners. Rodriguez had hit a walk-off home run against Hamren in Friday’s contest. This time Hamren got Rodriguez to ground into a fielder’s choice allowing one run to score. Justin Smoak stepped to the plate next and popped up to Anthony Contreras at shortstop to end the game and give Hamren his ninth save. Jorge Reyes pitched well for the Padres most of the night and was two outs away from his first complete game of the year. The win improved his record to 8-9. The second game was a low scoring affair. Sawyer Carroll would get Tucson on the board in the second inning with a line drive single to left field scoring Jesus Merchan from second base. Gyorko...

Ford drives Rainiers to win over Padres
Miles Mikolas was attempting to intentionally walk Luis Jimenez when he threw a wild pitch in the ninth inning to allow Tacoma’s Darren Ford to score from third base and give the Rainiers an 8-7 victory over Tucson on Saturday, July 28, at Kino Stadium. Ford who had hit a grand slam earlier in the game, reached base in the top of the ninth inning by singling to left field. He then stole second base and was sacrificed over to third before he came home to untie the game on the errant throw. The Rainiers' center fielder ended the night with four hits and six RBIs. The Padres tried to rally in the bottom half of the ninth with two outs when Andy Parrino singled and Jedd Gyorko walked, but Rainiers' closer Stephen Pryor closed out the game by striking out Vince Belnome. Tucson was down 7-4 heading into the sixth inning when they came back to tie the game. The inning began when Matt Clark thought he was walked and started heading to first base, but the home plate umpire called a delayed strike three. Clark and manager Terry Kennedy argued the call, but were both ejected from the game. Rocky Gale would later score two runs with a single to center field ending Rainier’s starting pitcher Danny Hultzen’s night. Hultzen was the second overall pick in the 2011 major league draft. Daniel Robertson would then step to the plate against Danny Farquhar and reach on an error by Rainier’s third baseman Alex Liddi. Sawyer Carroll would score on the play to tie the score at 7-7. Walk-off blast for Tacoma ends winning road trip for Padres
The Tucson Padres were one out away from ending their road trip with a shut out victory, but Rainiers’ second baseman Luis Rodriguez hit a two-run home run out to right field to give Tacoma a 2-1 walk-off win on Friday, July 27, at Cheney Stadium. Padres’ closer Erik Hamren was a strike away from completing his eighth save when he lost his command and walked Tacoma’s Alex Liddi with two outs. Rodriguez then came to plate and blasted his tenth home run of the year to hand Hamren the loss and his third blown save. The starting pitcher for Tucson, Bear Bay, went 6.1 innings allowing only five batters to reach base. Relievers Nick Vincent and Corey Burns continued to keep Tacoma scoreless through the seventh and eighth innings. In the top of the eighth Beamer Weems provided the first run of the game with his third home run of the season, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead. Aside from the loss, Tucson still had a very successful road trip winning five of the eight games in Sacramento and Tacoma. The Padres and Rainiers will start a new series in Tucson, Ariz., starting on Saturday, July 28. The game at Kino Stadium will start at 7:05 p.m.

Baseball takes Czech native from Tucson to Dominican Republic
Baseball players are like pilots when it comes to traveling. Opportunities come up in their playing careers that will land them in new cities and even countries. Daniel Vavrusa, 21, is well aware of this path. A native of Prague, Czech Republic, went to high school for a year at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in Tucson, Ariz., and is now playing for the New York Yankees’ Dominican Summer League team in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. Vavrusa who had been playing for SaBat Prague and Korlarka Praha in the Czech was offered a contract by the Yankees in July of 2011. He considered playing at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz., before signing with New York. This year in his first full season in the Dominican he is batting .309 with 19 RBIs and one home run in 24 games. As a catcher, he has thrown out 57 percent of the base runners attempting to steal. “This is my second year here and I have to say that I have improved so much,” said Vavrusa. “I feel much more comfortable at the plate and behind the plate as well. I just hope that I will keep it up for the rest of the season." Not only has Vavrusa been able to make adjustments on the field, but also with living in a new country. “The biggest challenge for me is language. I didn't know any Spanish before I got here. Now I'm doing pretty good.” This is not the first time Vavrusa has had to acclimate himself to a new country. He spent the 2008-2009 school year in Tucson, attending Pusch Ridge. That year Vavrusa...
